TSO & TAO Transmission Revenue

The CRU’s role is to protect electricity customers by ensuring that the network companies, EirGrid and ESB Networks (ESBN), spend customers’ money appropriately and efficiently to deliver necessary services. The CRU does this through the Price Review process, which sets the transmission revenues that the network companies will be allowed to recover from customers during the next five years to safely operate, develop and maintain the transmission system. The transmission revenues, which feed into the transmission tariffs, are updated by the CRU every year, as well as the tariffs.

The current Price Review for electricity (referred as to PR4), runs from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2020. The PR4 decision and all related documents (i.e. consultation paper, responses, consultants’ reports, revenue models, etc.) are included in this web page.

The CRU carries out revenue adjustments every year of the Price Review period – approving the allowed transmission revenues and publishing an Information Paper annually –  to ensure that most up to date information is used. This approach enables the CRU to:

  • Smoothen out the impact on tariffs of any under or over recoveries,
  • build an understanding of the drivers of costs and tariffs on an annual basis, and
  • communicate those tariffs and updates to customers on a regular basis.

The approved annual allowed transmission revenues feed into the annual transmission tariffs, which apply from 1 October to 30 September. The transmission tariffs are referred to as Transmission Use of System (TUoS) tariffs and are divided in Generator TUoS (G-TUoS) tariffs and Demand TUoS (D-TUoS) tariffs, which are charged to generators and suppliers respectively. Currently D-TUoS tariffs make up approximately 8% of an average residential customer’s electricity bill. However, suppliers decide how to structure the tariffs they offer to consumers to recover their costs, including other non-network related costs.

This web page includes the following CRU’s Information Papers:
