The CRU has responsibility for the regulation of electrical contractors and gas installers with respect to Safety. The CRU discharges this function via the Safe Electric and the Registered Gas Installer (RGI) schemes. The schemes are operated on a day-to-day basis by designated Safety Supervisory Bodies (SSBs). The current designation period runs for a 7-year period, from 2016 to the end of 2022.
The CRU has initiated a project, the SSBs Designation 2023 project, with the objective of designating the Electrical and Gas SSBs that will operate the CRU’s statutory regulatory schemes, Safe Electric and RGI, from 2023. The appointment of SSBs for the next designation period will be carried out through a competitive tender process in 2022.
As part of the project, the CRU will also review the existing SSBs arrangements in order to identify and make improvements, where possible. This will be carried out in two review stages, through focused stakeholder communication and engagement and/or a consultation process.
