Background

Energy prices are going up in Ireland and around the world. The main reason is the rising cost of buying energy globally, especially gas, which the majority of our electricity is generated from in Ireland.

Another important factor for the cost of energy is our need in Ireland to lower our reliance on fossil fuels and protect the environment. To do this, we need to switch to clean energy sources like wind and solar.

That means building new renewable energy sources and upgrading the electricity grid so that it can to handle them and also the increase in demand by a growing population and economy.

This work is already happening and will continue for the next 10 years. While it’s a smart investment in our future, it does mean energy costs may stay higher for now.

It is important that all energy customers know how these costs are seen on their bills and that being mindful of their energy usage and also regularly switching supplier can keep their own bills as low as possible.
