CRU secures prosecution for carrying out illegal electrical works on domestic properties
Wexford man convicted of illegally undertaking restricted electrical works

The CRU prosecuted Simon Murphy of The Hollow, Ramsgrange, New Ross, Co. Wexford for carrying out illegal electrical works on two separate domestic properties and falsely claiming to be a registered electrical contractor (REC) at Wexford District Court
Mr Murphy pleaded guilty to four separate offences at Wexford District Court on 26 May 2025. Mr Murphy carried out restricted electrical works at two properties in Co. Wexford without being a registered electrical contractor and also described himself in a manner likely to suggest he was a registered electrical contractor.
Evidence in the form of photographs taken by CRU Electrical Investigation Officer, Jonathan Clare, were shown to the Court indicating serious safety issues at both properties. The Court was told on behalf of the CRU that incorrect cable sizes were used which could have led to overheating of the cables and potentially cause a fire. Further breaches of the National Rules for Electrical Installations included double-pole isolation not being installed in a distribution board, no RCD protection on some circuits, and a new electric shower which was connected to an existing shower supply creating a potential overload.
Judge White directed Mr Murphy to repay €2,180 to the homeowners for the illegal electrical works and €400 as a contribution to the costs of the CRU.
On 22 September 2025 Wexford District Court was informed that these amounts had been paid by Mr Murphy and in the circumstances Mr Murphy was convicted and fined €300.
It is illegal for a person or company to carry out Restricted Electrical Works or to falsely portray themselves as registered, unless they are a Registered Electrical Contractor with the Safe Electric Scheme.
There are approximately 4,000 Registered Electrical Contractors in Ireland. By using a REC, consumers can have confidence that they are dealing with a competent contractor who has the required expertise in electrical safety to ensure the safe operation of their electrical installation. The REC is insured, and a sample of their work is inspected by Safe Electric on an annual basis. A REC must issue you with a completion certificate for electrical works carried out.
The penalties for non-compliance for those caught undertaking the works include a fine of up to €50,000 and/or imprisonment for up to 3 years.
