Renter safety checklist
Moving into a new home is exciting. Learn the essential gas and electrical safety checks every tenant should know to keep yourself, your household and your home safe.
Your rights as a tenant
Your landlord must ensure that gas and electrical systems are safe and maintained. This includes ensuring all repairs are carried out by Registered Gas Installer (RGI) or Register of Electrical Contractor (REC) professionals.
Remember, as a tenant you have the right to raise concerns and request repairs — the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) actually considers it one of your responsibilities as a tenant!
When you move in
- Get your Registered Gas Installer (RGI) gas safety certificate from your landlord
- Locate your gas meter, fuse box and shut-off switches
- Save the relevant emergency contact numbers
Gas safety
If you smell gas, turn off the supply, ventilate, avoid switches, and call the Gas Networks Ireland 24-hour emergency line immediately on 1800 20 50 50 or +353 (0) 1 920 5050.

Electrical safety
If you notice electrical issues, report them to your landlord immediately.
