Gas meter tampering
Your gas meter ensures your home receives a safe supply of gas and that your usage is accurately recorded. Interfering with a gas meter is dangerous, illegal, and put lives at risk.
What is gas meter tampering?
Gas meter tampering includes any unauthorised interference with your gas meter or supply, such as:
- Bypassing or altering the meter
- Breaking safety seals
- Reconnecting supply without authorisation
- Allowing someone else to modify the meter
How is gas meter tampering dangerous?
Gas Networks Ireland (GNI) identifies tampering as a serious public safety risk as it affects not just the household attached to the meter in question, but neighbours and the wider community. Tampering can result in:
- Gas leaks, explosions, or fire
- Exposure to carbon monoxide (CO)
- Serious injury or death
What are the signs of gas meter tampering?
Keep an eye out for any unusual pipework or meter damage, and if anyone offers to ‘reduce your bill’ by altering the meter, report it to Gas Networks Ireland.
What are the legal and financial consequences?
Meter tampering is a criminal offence, and therefore comes with serious consequences. Anyone who tampers with a gas meter, or engages someone to tamper with a meter, can face prosecution, fines, disconnection of supply, or charges for damaged equipment and gas used.
