Gas burning cooker

Through ongoing engagement with Gas Networks Ireland, the CRU has identified potential near‑term pressures on the gas network, driven in part by increasing demand from large industrial users. To address these challenges, the CRU considers it necessary to take timely action to protect security of supply, while continuing to facilitate new connections in a sustainable way. The consultation sets out a proposal to introduce a mandatory interruptible gas product for new large industrial customers with significant demand requirements, allowing the network to operate more flexibly during periods of system stress. This approach is designed to balance continued economic development with the need to maintain system stability and protect consumers.

Importantly, the proposed Direction does not alter existing statutory rights for domestic or non‑domestic customers to connect to the gas network, nor does it seek to delay or restrict Gas Networks Ireland’s planned programme of network expansion.

The CRU is now seeking feedback from stakeholders on the proposed measures and alternative options outlined in the consultation. Submissions are invited by 17:00 on 5 August 2026, with a final decision to follow after all responses have been considered.
